The International Year of Quantum was inaugurated by UNESCO
The SPIN Research Program participated in the opening day of the International Year of Quantum, held on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at UNESCO in Paris. This significant event brought together key figures in the quantum field for scientific presentations and strategic discussions on the challenges and opportunities of this technological revolution
A day filled with various interventions
The day was animated by presentations from researchers and influential personalities, including Anne L’Huillier, Nobel Laureate in Physics 2023, and Professor William D. Phillips, Nobel Laureate in Physics 1997. The latter notably illustrated the fundamental principle of spin, an essential concept in quantum physics and at the heart of spintronics.
Roundtable discussions then explored various and strategic themes, led by representatives from governments, businesses, and international cooperations such as the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Poland, Microsoft, IBM, Girls in Quantum, and Stellenbosch University, including:
> Teaching and knowledge transmission in quantum physics.
> The role of industry in innovation and the application of technologies.
> The impact of quantum on sustainable development and energy consumption reduction.
The quantum and spintronics
The presence of the SPIN Research Program was essential to this event. Indeed, as a reminder, spintronics relies on a quantum property of electrons and plays a key role in the energy transition. Its main objective is to design more efficient technologies with lower energy consumption.
An essential international cooperation
A clear consensus emerged during the discussions: no country can develop high-performance quantum computing alone. International collaboration and exchanges between nations are essential to ensure the effective deployment of new innovative technologies.
In this regard, the SPIN Research Program is committed to sustaining the leadership of the French scientific community in Europe and internationally. The SPIN Research Program also aims to strengthen its collaborations with the Quantum PEPR to deploy a less energy-consuming digital world
Communication and promotion
The exchanges during the event highlighted the need to promote the field, raise public awareness of its scientific advancements, attract a new generation, and encourage women to get involved in this area. This is one of the most important challenges in inspiring younger people to join these fields.
In this regard, the SPIN Research Program is actively committed through its training and science communication initiatives, aiming to make this knowledge accessible to all.
