SUPERSPIN: Launch of the project for sustainable electronic technologies

On March 27–28, 2025, the launch of the SUPERSPIN project took place at the Institut Jean Lamour (IJL), bringing together researchers from six partner laboratories. Funded by the SPIN Research Program with €1 million over 42 months, SUPERSPIN combines superconductivity and spintronics to develop innovative electronic devices that reduce heating and enhance quantum coherence. SUPERSPIN is a project funded under the 2024 ANR call for proposals, with the main objective of combining superconductivity and spintronics to develop innovative electronic devices that reduce Joule heating and improve the quantum coherence of spin states used to carry information. Coordinated by Thomas Hauet from the SPIN-101 team at the Institut Jean Lamour (IJL), SUPERSPIN aims to deliver significant advances in the field of electronics.
Spintronics is revolutionizing traditional electronics by offering new functionalities and significant energy advantages through the manipulation of electron spin rather than charge. However, challenges remain in reducing Joule dissipation, increasing the amplitude and lifetime of spin currents, and optimizing detection methods. The SUPERSPIN project aims to overcome these obstacles by combining superconductivity and spintronics. By leveraging quasi-particles and spin-polarized triplet Cooper pairs, SUPERSPIN seeks to eliminate Joule losses and protect spin states through their quantum coherence. Despite progress over the past 15 years, fundamental and technical issues persist. SUPERSPIN proposes to explore new superconducting/magnetic hybrid heterostructures to efficiently generate these states, and to develop innovative methodologies for their detection and manipulation at nanometer and picosecond scales.
