The NIFTY project is developing a new approach to magnetoelectric coupling using ferroelectric nitrides to design CMOS-compatible ME-RAM. It also aims to create ultra-low-power spin-orbitronic devices and ferroelectric two-dimensional electron gases for high-mobility transistors.
Challenges
> Develop new magnetoelectric coupling mechanisms using ferroelectric nitrides, enabling 180° magnetization switching and potentially leading to the design of CMOS-compatible ME-RAM.
> Create ferroelectric spin-orbitronic (FESO) memory logic devices by combining ferroelectric nitrides and topological insulators (BiSb) for ultra-low-power applications.
> Generate ferroelectric two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) with tunable Rashba spin-orbit coupling and high room-temperature mobility by leveraging (Al,Sc)N/GaN stacks to develop ferroelectric high-electron-mobility transistors (Fe-HEMTs).
The positioning of the project with the PEPR
> The NIFTY project proposes a new platform of CMOS-compatible ferroelectric materials to advance spintronics and ferroelectricity-controlled magnetism toward industrialization. It fully aligns with the objectives of the PEPR Spin program, which focuses on energy-efficient, agile, and sustainable electronics. NIFTY also contributes to several ambitious PEPR projects, including chiral texture manipulation (MP1), spin-based THz emission (MP2), and RF oscillators (MP4). Finally, it maintains strong synergy with the EMCOM project of the PEPR Electronics program by providing a key material foundation to realize low-power spintronics concepts.
